Poll Results: How Do You Feel People Perceive The Domain Name Industry?

On January 25th I posted a poll titled: “How Do You Feel People Perceive The Domain Name Industry?“. A total of 37 votes were placed with Negatively coming in as the top selection. Negatively received 13 votes and They Don’t Know We Exist came in second with 9 votes.

I had a feeling that Negatively would end up coming in first and They Don’t Know We Exist would be the second most popular selection. They Don’t Care came in third with 8 votes and Positively came in fourth with only 4 votes. Neutrally came in fifth with 3 votes.  This poll was inspired by an article published by DomainIncite titled “It’s official: people hate the domain name industry“.

According to this poll the majority of us would probably agree with the article. I can’t really determine what will happen in the future, but I hope that more of us would vote for Positively if this poll were conducted two to three years from now. I would like to see the public opinion change towards this industry and it will definitely happen as long as we continue to move forward by educating end-users on the importance of a domain name.

  • This is a conclusion that I fully agree with (too), and is why I always spend my annual ‘conference-attendance’ dollars on (pure) industry events related to my domain name categories (e.g., bleeding edge technologies) rather than attending the incestuous domaining events.

    • Gene what conferences have you attended in the past? What kind of opportunities were you able to create for yourself by attending industry events which relate to your domain name categories?

This is something that I’ve thought about doing as well. Thanks for sharing this with us!

  • I’ve attended many over the years, including Printed Electronics USA, CES, Graphene Live, SIFMA Tech Expo, TD Ameritrade Conference, Legal Tech,…and about 50 others.

While my expectations are never that I’m going to bump into a prospective buyer of one of my names, that’s not why I go. I attend to get new ideas, validate/invalidate existing holdings, and just (generally) make contacts with industry participants.

  • Incidentally for those of your readers who aren’t familiar with the amazing world of Printed Electronics/Devices and Nanomaterials like Graphene and Silicene, they might want to learn something about those incredible areas which are about to change the world as we know it:
